Ellen & Bob will always hold a special place in our lives. They were married exactly one week before us. I took their wedding knowing we'd be in the throws of our own planning, but also knowing how connected we'd be to everything that happened during their day. Ellen lost her mom around the same age that I lost mine. She made it through her day with ease...which gave me strength going into my own wedding. Bob's father isn't around any longer either. The lack of these two very important people was felt, but in a wonderful way. Both Ellen & Bob's siblings, as well as their parents who were present, made sure to mention them and make them a part of the day.
They chose Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Melrose for their venue. The building was dedicated in 1912 and in recent years has undergone renovation. The space is incredible! It has a stage and seating for 800 + a huge dance floor. There are two dressing rooms on either side of the stage, which was perfect for me. I was able to bounce back and forth between Bob and Ellen getting ready. I believe this was the second wedding that has ever been held in the hall. The first being in the early 1900s.
Ellen & Bob had their ceremony on the stage, which has beautiful woodwork. There was even an old organ, which they were able to use because a friend of theirs actually knows how to play! They wrote their own vows and chose beautiful readings. The ceremony was very them, which is what a ceremony should be, in my opionion.
During the ceremony, Peter (who is a bit afraid of heights) was incredibly brave and went up into the catwalk to grab a shot. (thank you!) And, one of the funniest moments I have experienced photographing a ceremony was when I saw Bob take out his pocket watch...just as Ellen entered the doorway to the hall! I later found out it was because Ellen had made a timeline down to each minute of how the day would flow. Sure enough she was right on time.
Afterwards, we took a walk down main street to a small park for photos of just Ellen & Bob. And then it was back inside for the party!
